WOAI San Antonio Living Announces The 2012 Fit Family Challenge

Getting fit is hard. It takes commitment, and oftentimes, it takes an incentive. For local San Antonians, San Antonio Sports is more than happy to provide this incentive in the form of its third annual Fit Family Challenge – a summer long program offering participants the chance to win up to four prizes of $1,000 each, just for getting active, eating healthy and keeping track of ongoing fitness progress.

Wednesday, May 16, the WOAI San Antonio Living Show welcomed last year’s $3,000 grand prize winning family, the Guedea’s, stopped by the studios to chat with WOAI’s Shelly Miles about the amazing program and the permanent change its made in their lives.

“We started changing different ways how we cook…and being active,” explained Petra Guedea.

The once inactive family has transformed into a dedicated clan of fitness fans, now exercising almost daily with activities like basketball and walking. However, the Guedea family represents only a snippet of the many in San Antonio who have used the growing fitness program to propel their own improved health habits.

Since the beginning of last year’s Fit Family Challenge program, 62% of all San Antonio adults had waist-to-hip ratios (WHRs) that made them moderately to strongly susceptible to obesity related risks, like heart disease and diabetes. With children, that number was at a 49% high. This year, 45% of adults have reported more positive nutrition, while 48% have reported increased, regular physical activity.

The Challenge’s ripples have been felt throughout the city and with another year’s program gearing up, it seems the improvements will only continue. “We’re kicking it off this Saturday [Saturday, May 19]…at Port San Antonio, at 8 a.m.,” said Dr. Susan Blackwood, San Antonio Sports’ Executive Director. “It’s a 5K, sponsored by Councilman Saldana.”

The Guedea family and several others plan to be in attendance at the program’s first event of the season. Already, more than 1,000 participants have signed up. To add your name to the list of attendees, go online to www.FitFamilyChallenge.com to register your family, and with more than 100 events happening throughout the summer, San Antonio Sports’ Fit Family Challenge plans to give any family the chance to join, get healthy and win.

Fit Family Challenge is an educational program motivating San Antonio families to learn about and increase physical activity and healthy nutrition. Fit Family Challenge is an activity conducted by San Antonio Sports, with funding from the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation and participation from sponsors, several area school districts and volunteers. Program registration is free and in order to be eligible for the $1,000 cash grand prize, families must complete a minimum of at least 3 events, complete their fitness and nutrition tracking log.
