San Antonio – Community First Health Plans, the only local, nonprofit health insurer in the Bexar County service delivery area, recently earned accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, or NCQA, for its Medicaid, Commercial and Health Insurance Marketplace lines of business.
The interim accreditation status is effective from May 8, 2014, to Nov. 8, 2015. NCQA Health Plan accreditation is a nationally recognized evaluation that purchasers, regulators and consumers can use to assess health plans. It evaluates the quality of health care that health plans provide to their members.
“NCQA accreditation is significant because this means our organization meets the national standards in delivering quality health care to the San Antonio and South Texas community that we proudly serve,” said Community First President and CEO Greg Gieseman.
The accreditation process was led by Community First Medical Director Dr. Matha Arun, who said of the news: “What this means for us in particular, is Community First has accomplished a higher standard of quality health care that we provide to our own members through our providers.”
NCQA standards are intended to help organizations achieve the highest level of performance possible and create an environment of continuous quality improvement. Community First is working to reach fully accredited status over the next 18 months through a survey and review process.

It also recognizes clinicians and practices in key areas of performance. NCQA is committed to providing health care quality information for consumers, purchasers, health care providers and researchers.
