Like most of us, I started my 2016 off with a desire to make my life better than it was the year before. Eat healthier, hit the gym, take a cooking class (ANY cooking class) – all the usual New Year’s resolutions I’ve sworn before – and ultimately left behind in the drive-thru lane.
Turns out, those things cost money – in some cases, lots of money. Am I really going to spend $6 a day on a bag o’ salad when there’s a tasty (and most likely cancer-inducing) dollar menu right around the corner? (And please don’t respond with “you could always make your own salads” – we’ve already established that my cooking skills are at a sub-salad level) Gym memberships at my nearest Crossfit box are close to $50 a month. A personal trainer? Yeah, right. I’m still paying off all the unhealthy decisions I made in my 20’s.

Mmmmm – salad.

If only I were a Community First Health Plans member – then I could apply for the ‘Experience Your Dreams’ Award program. To celebrate 20 years as the San Antonio’s only non-profit health plan provider, Community First is giving out 10 $1000 awards to families or non-profits who show they want to make San Antonio a healthier place. That could be anything from taking some cooking classes to getting a personal trainer for a few months to taking the family on a health-inspired adventure. For non-profits, it could even mean starting up a free fitness class so I don’t have to drop $300 every few months to get yelled at “encouragingly” by some overenthusiastic tank-top clad cult leader who wants me to do pull-ups until I get rhabdomyolysis.

I always look at people and smile when I jog. Or, I would – if I jogged.

Sadly, as an employee for esd, I’m not eligible to apply for our client’s promotional offers – but YOU can be! All you have to do is sign up to become a Community First Health Plans member. Not only does getting your health plan through CFHP keep you from getting dinged with hundreds of dollars in fines on your taxes, but it also gives you access to affordable health care AND the awards program! If you’re already a member and you haven’t signed up for the awards program yet, I’m not sure what’s wrong with you. It’s like you just saw $1000 lying on the ground and were like, “but bending is hard!”
As for me, I’ll be getting healthy the traditional American way – through yo-yo dieting and shame.
