Alamo City Cancer Council founder Dr. Sharon Wilks applauded Angelina Jolie-Pitt’s public announcement that she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to prevent cancer shows the importance of both early detection and generic counseling.
Dr. Wilks made her remarks in a KSAT News report following the announcement.
Jolie-Pitt lost her mother, grandmother and aunt to cancer, previously had a double mastectomy after genetic testing showed she was at risk for cancer. In an op-ed on the New York Times editorial page, Jolie-Pitt said she had been considering the surgery and a cancer scare prompted her to go through with it.
“It is not easy to make these decisions. But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue,” she wrote. “You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power.”
